Chipping Steps is medieval, and leads down three flights of cobbled steps from The Chipping to Cirencester Road.
The Victoria County History describes it "by the 1690s several such tenements included cottages facing on the Chipping and the lane which descends by a series of steps to the bottom of the hill. The area had become one of the humbler parts of the town: the houses there belonging to the Estcourts were occupied in the 18th century by such people as carpenters, masons, and cordwainers."
Most of these cottages are now listed and images can be found as follows:
Chipping Steps Independent Chapel was at the bottom of the hill with a burial ground adjacent. The house is long since gone but the burial ground remains having recently been restored by volunteers.
