Chipping Steps

PLACES > Streets
Chipping Steps is medieval, and leads down three flights from The Chipping to Cirencester Road.
The VCH describes it "by the 1690s several such tenements included cottages facing on the Chipping and the lane which descends by a series of steps to the bottom of the hill. The area had become one of the humbler parts of the town: the houses there belonging to the Estcourts were occupied in the 18th century by such people as carpenters, masons, and cordwainers."
